Between 20th and 28th May<\/strong>, he\u2019ll be exhibiting at La Grande Plage<\/strong>\u00a0in Biarritz<\/strong>. After that, he\u2019ll be exhibiting at your favourite place\u2026 Nami House<\/strong> !<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He might be the most Basque person<\/em> among Japanese people…\u00a0He has had multiple lives<\/strong> : from surfer<\/strong> on the North Shore<\/strong> of Oahu, Hawa\u00ef,<\/strong> to painter<\/strong>, he met during his life all the surfing legends: king Kelly Slater, Gerry Lopez, Laird Hamilton, Miki Dora<\/strong>, to name just a few.<\/p>\n

The Aloha<\/em> encounter<\/h2>\n

We meet Mayumi at his “local office” – Surfrider Foundation <\/a>headquarters in Biarritz<\/strong> – where he paints nowadays. We arrive at the car park in front of the building and see a guy painting a massive wave outside.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Mayumi doesn\u2019t see us at first : he has his back turned with his headphones on, certainly to focus on his painting, to be in “the zone”.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

When he sees us, he turns with a gentle smile. We can see he knows how to make you feel comfortable : there is not that kind of distance you may feel sometimes with Japanese people… You can tell he left Japan a long time ago.<\/p>\n

<\/h2>\n

The Dragon legend<\/h2>\n

As soon as we move inside to see his work, Mayumi starts talking about where he comes from, explaining the meaning of the Aloha spirit<\/strong>, detailing all Hawaiian legends<\/strong> he tells through his painting. He talks about the thousand people he has met during his life.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

His thoughts go in many directions and sometimes it\u2019s a bit hard to follow\u2026 But still, there is a link between all the stories he tells us.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

We start walking through his paintings and he tells us about the dragon legend<\/strong> :<\/p>\n

She comes from 9600 miles.<\/p>\n

Hawaiian coast is her last breath.<\/p>\n

She\u2019s got two lives: she goes left and right.<\/p>\n

You can never kill it.<\/p>\n

One foot or thirty feet, she\u2019s a dragon.<\/p>\n

Mayumi’s hundred lives<\/h2>\n

On arrival in Hawaii <\/strong>back in the 70\u2019s<\/strong> at the age of 19<\/strong>, he goes directly to Waikiki beach<\/strong>, drops off his luggage, rents a surfboard and starts paddling into the ocean.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Not yet used to big waves, he starts drowning until a hand pulls him out of the water, puts him back on his board and screams : \u00ab paddle, paddle ! \u00bb. No longer knowing where he is, Mayumi just keeps on paddling until the guy screams : \u00ab stop ! \u00bb.<\/p>\n

He has a look in front of him and sees the massive face of a wave below him. He\u2019s sitting on top of it. Right then, the guy that just saved his life starts screaming again : \u00ab Now ! Paddle ! Paddle !<\/strong> \u00bb.<\/p>\n

That was the first big drop of Mayumi\u2019s life, at Waikiki beach<\/strong> in Hawa\u00ef<\/strong>.\u00a0The guy who saved his life is a certain Rabbit Keka\u00ef<\/strong> and was about to change his life forever.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A few years later he gets his revenge by being part of the surfing crew on the North shore<\/strong> of Oahu<\/strong>. That\u2019s where all the most famous waves break : Pipeline, Backdoor, Sunset Beach, Waimea bay.<\/strong><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

He tells us about Jamie O’brien<\/strong> (NDLR : today a famous Hawaiian free-surfer) who, aged 12, asked him :<\/p>\n

\u00ab Uncle Mayumi, how come I don\u2019t see any tourist on the beach going to the toilets : where do they go to do it ?\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n

Mayumi looks at him and says (pointing at the ocean) : \u00ab where do you think they do it ?\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n

Looking at the ocean, James replies : \u00ab What ? In there ? Are you serious ?\u00a0\u00bb<\/p>\n

As westerners, we definitely don\u2019t have the same respect for the ocean as Hawaiian people…<\/p>\n

Japanese double room Amami<\/em><\/h2>\n

\"chambreHalf an hour after we start talking, his phone beeps : he reads the text and says : \u00ab Oh it\u2019s Justine Mauvin<\/strong> (NDLR : French Longboard Champion<\/strong>), coming to say Hi ! Do you mind if we come to your place ? \u00bb<\/p>\n

30 minutes later we all arrive at Nami House<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

We introduce our new friends to Amami<\/em> room<\/strong> : our Japanese-style double room<\/strong> with tatami mats<\/strong> covering the floor and traditional futon mattresses<\/strong>. Mayumi takes a deep breath and says \u2013 his Japanese roots speaking : \u00ab I love that fresh smell of brand new futon \u00bb.<\/p>\n

Gen Mai Cha tea-break<\/h2>\n

Once we finish the visit, they join us downstairs in the Hawaiian-style lounge<\/strong> to share a Gen Mai Cha<\/strong> (Japanese tea).<\/p>\n

Once again, the conversation is jumping in all directions : from Shintoism<\/strong>, to Buddhism<\/strong> and Zen word<\/strong> meaning, then the Reunion Island<\/strong> slave trade (NDLR : Justine comes from this small idyllic island of\u00a0the Indian Ocean).<\/p>\n
