After several trips to the Basque Country, we wanted to tell you a little more about the habits and traditions of our Basque friends.<\/p>\n

To help you immerse yourself in this mysterious land, we have written this short glossary for non-basque people.<\/p>\n

Bixente Lizarazu : a basque among famous people<\/h2>\n

First of all, a quick note regarding pronunciation. Let’s take a concrete example: Bixente Lizarazu<\/strong>, have you ever heard of him?<\/p>\n

\u00a0No, really?! He won the World Football Cup with the French team in 1998 <\/strong>and now, he is a football analyst on both French TV and radio.<\/p>\n

As for his private life, he is the ex-husband of Elsa<\/strong> (unforgettable singer of the hit T’en va pas<\/a> and Un roman d’amiti\u00e9<\/a> in duet with the handsome Glenn Medeiros<\/strong> with his beautiful black hairpiece). Since 2006, he is married to the French actress Claire Keim. They are the proud parents of a little girl Uhaina<\/strong> (the wave in Basque)… What a rich culture this blog is, huh?<\/p>\n

But let’s get back to the topic in hand: Bixente Lizarazu<\/strong>. There are stories in the country that he has a knack for leaving the restaurant and forgetting to pay the bill, same goes for the craftsmen who came to do work on his house. But that’s just gossip \"undecided\".<\/p>\n

Repeat after me<\/h2>\n

How does Basque language work? Well, it’s actually quite simple:<\/p>\n

  • The “x<\/strong>” in “Bixente” is pronounced “ch<\/strong>“,<\/li>\n
  • The “e<\/strong>” in “Bixente” is pronounced “\u00e9<\/strong>“,<\/li>\n
  • The “z<\/strong>” in “Lizarazu” is pronounced “s<\/strong>“,
    (not to be confused with the “s” which is pronounced “sh”),<\/li>\n
  • Finally, the “u<\/strong>” in “Lizarazu” is pronounced “ou<\/strong>“.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    This gives us: Bichent\u00e9 Lissarassou!<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n

    Is that enough for the pronunciation? So let’s move on to vocabulary…<\/p>\n

      Eur\u00eaka, I got it!<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      Euskara<\/strong>, not to be confused with the famous word that Archimede supposedly said (ok I must confess, I checked on wikipedia) simply means \u00ab basque<\/strong>\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n

        \"painTxokolate Ogi<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

        Means chocolate croissant or\u00a0pain au chocolat<\/strong><\/em>. Oops, I was referring to cholatine<\/em><\/strong> of course! We’ re in the South-West of France, and in this region, saying “pain au chocolat” sounds like a bit of a tourist…<\/p>\n

          Cesta Punta<\/h3>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

          When it comes to Basque pelota<\/strong>, each category has a specific tool!<\/p>\n

          If you have ever been slapped by a Basque player, you can tell by the diameter of the bruise on your cheek whether he or she is playing pelota “barehanded”<\/strong> or using a “chistera<\/strong>“.<\/p>\n

          Cesta Punta<\/strong> is played with a chistera<\/strong>, a kind of big horn that makes players send smashes at more than 200Km\/h:<\/p>\n
